A Brief Biography

I was born and raised in New Jersey, graduated from Georgetown University in Washington, D.C. in 1973, and came to Brazil to live and work in 1977. My wife Celia and I have two grown children. Both are educators. I have been covering Brazil as a foreign correspondent since the days of the 1970’s military dictatorship, working for mainly U.S. news organizations such as Associated Press, Knight-Ridder and Dow Jones. Early in the new century, I had the privilege of working at Brazil’s newspaper of record, O Estado de S. Paulo. My freelance articles have appeared in The Wall Street Journal, Institutional Investor, Contemporary Review, Americas and many others. I am co-author of two Brazilian travel guides under the Insight banner, and contributor to two collections of essays about the foreign press in Brazil and two collections of short fiction on Brazilian themes. See website tabs for links to my books, plays, short fiction, and photography.
